I’m a senior engineer at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where I develop autonomous underwater vehicles and oceanographic systems. I studied Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan.
- I’ve led system- and vehicle-level designs, such as the propulsion, buoyancy, and maneuvering systems for the DARPA Manta Ray glider, and various deepwater UUVs, including a 3,000-meter titanium vehicle.
- Recently I’ve worked on hardware and machine learning co-design, exploring how models and the data they need should shape instrument design and deployment in data-sparse environments. SWARM, a low-cost synchronized wave-sensing array, is designed around collecting optimal training data for deep learning models.
- Earlier I worked in commercial ship design, as lead naval architect for the Clean Jacksonville, the Quad Cities, and the Annie Moore.
- Separately, I built and operate seastate, a platform that runs daily nested spectral wave simulations and translates them into 7-day surf forecasts, with the full pipeline running on a Mac mini.
